Of Point Breeze, age 70, died peacefully at her home on Friday, February 27, 2026.
Cheryl was the beloved wife of David Nixon for 30 years.
She was the loving stepmother of George (Michelle) Nixon of Utica, N.Y.
She was the cherished grandmother of Jack Nixon and Gabriella Nixon.
Cheryl was one of 11 children of the late Hugo and late Barbara (Oblich) Kareis.
She is survived by siblings, Richard (Barbara) Kareis, Judith (late Dr. Michael) Painter, Maureen (Thomas) Horner, Brian Kareis and Lynne (Dale) Gensamer.
Cheryl was preceded in death by siblings, Barbara (late James) Haggerty, Marilyn (late Robert) Wolf, Eileen (late Joseph) Amelio, Dorothy Kareis and Kevin Kareis.
She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Cheryl was raised in Chalfant and was a 1973 graduate of Churchill High School. She earned her B.A. in Journalism from Penn State University. While a student at Penn State McKeesport, unbeknownst to her or him, she met her future husband, David, who was one of her professors. After graduation, she was employed with AAA and by chance, David met Cheryl for the second time, at her work while receiving a Triptik. Then in 1987, a romance kindled when they were reintroduced by her sister, Judy.
After working with AAA, Cheryl entered the banking industry and rose to the level of Trust Officer with Equibank and, after a merger of banks, National City Bank. Cheryl ended her career as an Administrative Assistant with UPMC at Western Psychiatric Hospital.
In respect of Cheryl’s wishes there will not be a public visitation or service. A private family interment service will take place at Braddock Catholic Cemetery.
